Background of the Study

Stress during examination periods is a common experience for students in higher education, and nursing students are particularly susceptible due to the demanding nature of their curriculum. Stress can arise from academic pressures, clinical placements, financial challenges, and personal issues (Eze et al., 2023). High levels of stress can negatively affect students' health, academic performance, and well-being (Oluwaseun & Adebayo, 2024). The relationship between stress and academic performance is complex, with some students performing better under stress, while others may experience performance declines.

At Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, nursing students face intense academic pressure, particularly during examination periods, when the demands of coursework and clinical rotations converge. Understanding the sources and effects of stress on nursing students can inform interventions to help them manage stress more effectively, improve their academic outcomes, and support their overall well-being.

Statement of the Problem

Nursing students at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, often experience high levels of stress during examination periods, which may affect their academic performance and mental health. However, there is limited research on the specific stressors that nursing students face and how stress impacts their examination performance. Identifying these stressors and understanding how they affect students can help develop strategies to alleviate stress and enhance students' academic success during exams.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the stress levels among nursing students during examination periods at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso.

2. To identify the primary sources of stress for nursing students during examinations.

3. To explore the impact of stress on nursing students' academic performance and well-being.

Research Questions

1. What are the stress levels among nursing students during examination periods at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso?

2. What are the primary sources of stress for nursing students during examinations?

3. How does stress impact nursing students' academic performance and well-being during examinations?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology experience high levels of stress during examination periods.

2. The primary sources of stress for nursing students during examinations are academic pressures, clinical placements, and personal factors.

3. Stress has a negative impact on nursing students' academic performance and well-being during examination periods.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, and assess their stress levels during examination periods. It will not examine stressors outside of examination periods or consider other aspects of student life. Findings may not be applicable to students in other institutions or disciplines.
